Meridian, Idaho

Meridian, ID

Meridian, Idaho, is a thriving suburb of Boise—a bustling, vibrant city located in Ada County in the lower southwest section of the state. The town sprawls across a vast, flat plain, with the Boise River running north of the city, the Snake River south, and the pictorial Owyhee Mountains visible along the southern vista.

The city is in the north-central part of the famed Treasure Valley, an area whose name was coined in 1959 to reflect the great "treasure chest" of resources the region offers, brought about by the confluence of six different rivers as they empty into the Snake River. This includes readily available transportation, advancements in irrigation, extensive farming, the rise of technology, and even lucrative gold and silver mining. But perhaps the greatest gem in the area is Meridian itself.

Meridian is the fastest-growing city in Idaho and the second-largest city in the state. It's considered one of the best places to live, not only in the state but in the whole country. In fact, it's one of the most rapidly growing cities in the United States. Its population has exploded from about 75,000 as of the 2010 Census to over 106,000 today and continues to grow steadily.

What makes Meridian so great? Maybe it's the fact that unemployment is low and good job opportunities abound. Or perhaps it's because the poverty rate is so low that it is one of the safest cities in which to live. Maybe it's the great schools and plentiful family-oriented resources. Or it could be the breathtaking scenic beauty, the spacious, uncrowded feel, despite being a large city with numerous urban amenities. Maybe it's the many parks and outdoor recreational opportunities. Perhaps it's the variety of entertainment venues, cultural diversity, and a broad range of social events. But most likely, the combination and balance of these elements make Meridian an exceptional place to live, work, play, raise a family, and even retire.

If you love to shop or are just looking for a great place to spend an afternoon, you'll have a great time at The Village—an outdoor mall area unlike any other. It offers a collection of shops, eateries, and entertainment that includes a little something for everyone, even a stunning water fountain to relax by.

Roaring Springs is a huge water park that offers some exciting thrills—including a 50-foot plunge down a waterfall, a double-drop slide that literally launches you into the air, and a canyon river rafting ride guaranteed to elicit a few high-pitched screams.

Meridian has a terrific variety of fine dining, casual fare, multi-ethnic offerings, pubs, and even some of the best barbeque you'll likely find at Goodwood Barbeque Company, the third most popular restaurant in the city.

We cannot talk about Meridian without talking about milk and ice cream. One of the earliest businesses in Meridian was the dairy industry. In the late 1800s, at a time when the town's population was only about 200, there were probably more cows than people there. Small dairy farmers delivered milk, cream, butter, and cheese to residents in horse-drawn wagons, and creameries sprang up throughout the region. Even during the Great Depression, the local dairy industry sustained the area. Primarily in thanks to the Ada County Dairymen's Cooperative Creamery, which began in 1929 and operated for 40 years. Nowadays, dairy farms are much less abundant in Meridian, but the industry still flourishes. If you live in Meridian, you can still get your milk delivered by Reeds Dairy, and their homemade ice cream is considered some of the best in the world, drawing customers from around the state and beyond. It's been described as "creamy and dreamy and supernaturally sumptuous" by Saveur Magazine. We bet you're craving some right now.

While Meridians may hold bragging rights to the world's best pint of Rocky Road, there's one thing they have in common with the rest of us: the ongoing challenge of home and building maintenance. As a town that dates back to the late 1800s, many homes and buildings in Meridian need continuing TLC to help keep their water the very best.
